In this latest edition of his popular book, Closed Head Injury: A Clinical Source Book, Dr. Peter Bernad, a noted expert and neurologist, continues his respected work on traumatic brain injury.

Written with  the trial attorney in mind, the fifth edition continues the discussion on the latest scientific findings on brain injury to help  uncover new territories for litigation. Practitioners will learn the nature of brain injuries, how to identify them, how to prove them in court, and understand the possibilities for treatment. Some of the topics Bernad covers are:

• How to correlate head injury to the deficits claimed, and determine what specific functions were damaged and to what degree

• How to separate preexisting conditions from those proximate to the cause of action

• How to provide a basis for an accurate and adequate amount of compensation

• How to identify instances of plaintiff malingering, “litigation neurosis,” and how social factors may contribute to prolonging a patient’s symptoms

• How to understand the cognitive consequences of even mild brain injury in children

• How to become familiar with the proper procedures of psychological and neurological evaluation and assessment in the medical setting;

• How to best use experts in building a proper case strategy

• How to distinguish between post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in head injury cases, especially in cases of military traumatic brain injury, and understand the evidence specific to each, and

• How to become familiar with the new diagnostic techniques and protocols being put in place nationwide to more quickly recognize (and address) traumatic brain injuries

With improvements in the presentation of material and in the update of critically important chapters, this volume is sure to become a frequently consulted addition to the practitioner's library.
