Lee H. Rosenthal was appointed a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division in 1992. Before then, she was a Partner at Baker & Botts in Houston, Texas, where she tried civil cases and handled appeals in the state and federal courts. Judge Rosenthal was appointed by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist in 1996 as a Member and in 2003 as Chair of the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. She is the former Chair of the Judicial Conference Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure, appointed in 2007 by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. In addition to serving as a district court judge for over 22 years, Judge Rosenthal has been invited to sit by designation with courts of appeals around the country. Her recognitions include selection as Trial Judge of the Year by the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists in 2000, 2006, and 2012. She received the Houston Bar Association's highest bar-poll evaluation for judges three times, in 1999, 2005, and 2007. Judge Rosenthal is a member of the American Law Institute, where she serves as an advisor for the Employment Law project and the Aggregate Litigation project and was an advisor for the Transnational Rules of Civil Procedure project. In 2007, she was elected to the ALI Council and in 2011 became Chair of the Program Committee.
David F. Levi became the 14th dean of Duke Law School on July 1, 2007. Prior to his appointment, he was the Chief United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California with chambers in Sacramento. He was appointed United States Attorney by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and a United States district judge by President George H. W. Bush in 1990. He has served as Chair of two Judicial Conference committees by appointment of the Chief Justice. He was Chair of the Civil Rules Advisory Committee (2000-2003) and chair of the Standing Committee on the Rules of Practice and Procedure (2003-2007); he has been reappointed to serve as a member of that committee (2009-2012). He is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute (ALI), was an advisor to the ALI's Federal Judicial Code Revision Project, and currently serves as an advisor to the Aggregate Litigation project. He was Chair of the Ninth Circuit Task Force on Race, Religious and Ethnic Fairness and was an author of the report of the Task Force. He was President of the Ninth Circuit District Judges Association (2003-2005). In 2014 was appointed Chair of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on the American Judicial System.
John K. Rabiej is the Director of the Duke Law Center for Judicial Studies. He joined Duke Law in early 2011 after serving as the Executive Director/Director of Judicial Outreach for The Sedona Conference since 2010. Previously, Mr. Rabiej was the Chief of the Rules Committee Support Office for twenty years, staffing the six rules committees of the United States Judicial Conference. He has written extensively on e-discovery, including chapter 37A of Moore's Federal Practice, which he updates quarterly, and chapters in Weinstein's Federal Evidence Manual. Mr. Rabiej has written more than 20 articles on e-discovery, which are published in the LexisNexis Emerging Issues series of expert commentaries. He has written many articles on rules-related issues, including the meaning and purposes of recent rule amendments. He was elected to the American Law Institute in 2005.
